The benefits of OpenDNS
First off, what exactly is OpenDNS? From their website,
OpenDNS is the world’s most intelligent DNS service. Our global network and our software work together symbiotically to offer a set of features custom-tailored to you, without requiring you to buy any hardware or install any software.
Since most of that went over MY head the first time I read it, let’s get some background information on exactly what a DNS Server is / does.
Doh!
I’ve upgraded to the latest version of Wordpress, and in the process deleted my custom theme. It’ll be around a week before things look the way they did before this little mishap. Deleting the theme is both a blessing and a curse: It’ll give me a reason to go through and optimize / clean up my code, but I’ll have to go through and re do everything!
Oh well…you only live once, and I love having time to code!
You only live once
Everyone has faced a decision where, after weighing the pros and cons, you’re still left sitting on the fence undecided. During such times, I’ve come to learn and live a call and response phrase coined by Isaac Wexman, a close friend:
“How many times do you live? Once.”
While it might not help you with every decision you face in life, my own indecisiveness has been resolved on a daily basis thanks to Isaac’s phrase.
The 15 minute daily breather
Another site I frequent on a semi-regular basis is Zen Habits, a blog that covers:
…achieving goals, productivity, being organized, GTD, motivation, eliminating debt, saving, getting a flat stomach, eating healthy, simplifying, living frugal, parenting, happiness, and successfully implementing good habits.
Building on their general principles, I’ve found a GTD (Getting Things Done) technique that only requires your mind and a 15 minute block of time. This 15 minute block of time can occur anywhere your thoughts can wander freely.
The 15 minute block can be an inalienable luxury to those that practice it or a discardable “waste of time” to those that don’t.
While 15 minutes might not seem like much, you’d be amazed at what you can accomplish. Spend the time letting your mind wander over all your to-do’s, but don’t allow yourself to become overwhelmed by the number or importance of your tasks.
Simply thinking your tasks over gives you a clear direction as to what to attack first. I guarantee you that you’ll quickly wonder how you lived without your daily 15.
Happy thinking
Customized much?
Just put the finishing touches on my own customized Wordpress installation. Still has a few validation issues on the main page, but everything else should be rock solid.
I already have a great idea for a series of articles, so stay tuned!
