The internet is my friend
Hi, my name’s Stephen, and I’m a web junkie.
I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember: long nights on the internet, eyes glued to a monitor glowing in the corner of a dark room. But you know what? I’ve accepted it.
“If it’s on the internet, I know about it” -Stephen Pontes
So where exactly do I spend my time until 4am nightly? Let’s take a quick tour around the internet super highway!
facebook. Social networking at it’s finest. You can share pictures, videos, links, and even give gifts to friends. Facebook also recently revamped its website with a clean new look, providing me yet another reason to spend countless hours looking through pictures of friends of friends. Creepy.
myspace. Ugh. Why am I even talking about this one? Myspace is like that guilty pleasure band you love…you know, Hanson? You publicly loathe it, you despise and rail against it. But deep down inside you and Myspace fills a void that facebook still can’t fill. Myspace was your first social network.
digg. It’s an interesting concept to wrap your head around, but digg is a social news website. From the horse’s mouth,
Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our users. You won’t find editors at Digg — we’re here to provide a place where people can collectively determine the value of content and we’re changing the way people consume information online.
Front page news is defined by the people that use digg. The more “diggs” an article gets, the more likely it’ll be promoted to the front page, where hundreds of thousands of people will view it. Great time killer of a site both for the sheer amount of articles that get front paged and the vast diversity of the articles submitted. Content covered includes celebrity gossip, technology, music and more.
RSS feeds. I subscribe to a number of RSS feeds, which are an aggregation of articles from various sites collected into a single window. Using RSS feeds is exactly like reading a newspaper: There are an overwhelming number of articles, but you only read the ones that interest you, allowing you to make the most of your time! Here are a few of my favorites:
- Unclutterer – Getting and staying organized. A place for everything, and everything in its place is our gospel.
- Digg – Social news
- DealMac – How to go broke saving money
- Slashdot – news for nerds. stuff that matters.
So there you have it! Now you too can spend countless hours wasting away in front of a glowing computer screen till 4am. So get going…I can only hope I’ll soon be on YOUR list of sites to visit.
See you when I see you.
Well hello there.
I’m not sure…
- What I’m going to write about
- How often I’ll be writing
- How long my posts will be
- What kinds of media to post
But this should be interesting nonetheless.
I’m still working on getting things exactly the way I want them to be (and I still need to figure out how to incorporate a side bar into the current design), but look forward to new posts relatively soon!
